Genome Organisation and Dynamics

Genome Organisation and Dynamics

Lead: Dr Ines Castro

We explore how the genome is organized to support healthy cell function, how this structure is passed through generations, and how it's affected by external stimuli, disease, and aging.

Cancer Mechanisms

Cancer Mechanisms

Lead: Dr Ahmet Ucar

Our research investigates the genetic, epigenetic, and signaling pathways that drive cancer. We aim to understand disease progression, identify early diagnostic markers, and develop new, more effective treatments.

Disease and Therapeutics

Disease and Therapeutics

Lead: Dr Victor Hernandez

We focus on preventing and treating hereditary and acquired diseases. Our work in gene therapy, which has already shown promise in over 300 clinical trials, uses viral vectors to deliver functional genes to patients, with a strong emphasis on safety and efficacy.

Organ-on-a-Chip Group

Organ-on-a-Chip Group

Lead: Dr Ruth Mackay

This multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers develops advanced in-vitro systems to study women's health. We are creating "organ-on-a-chip" platforms that mimic female organs to better understand and treat conditions like cancer, pregnancy complications, and infections.

Genomic Informatics and Epidemiology

Genomic Informatics and Epidemiology

Lead: Dr Cristina Sisu

We are an interdisciplinary group using computational and statistical methods to analyze genomic data. Our goal is to understand the role of the genome in health and disease, and to develop new tools for diagnosis, prediction, and intervention.

Centre for Health Effects of Radiological and Chemical Agents (CHRC)

Centre for Health Effects of Radiological and Chemical Agents (CHRC)

Lead: Prof Rhona Anderson

This externally-funded center studies the human health impact of radiological and chemical agents. Our research includes identifying genetic markers of radiation exposure, understanding health risks, and promoting well-being through education and engagement.

Cellular Differentiation and Tissue Structure

Cellular Differentiation and Tissue Structure

Leads: Dr Sibylle Ermler and Dr Gudrun Stenbeck

Our research explores how cells and tissues respond to and repair damage from environmental and lifestyle stressors. We investigate the complex coping mechanisms that protect against tissue degeneration, premature aging, and disease.

Space Travel

Space Travel

Lead: Prof. Emmanouil Karteris

We are a team of biologists, clinicians, and engineers studying how the human body adapts to the extreme conditions of space. Our research includes in-vitro experiments that mimic space-flight conditions to understand the molecular changes that occur.
